Moira
Garden
Visitors
to Tweed and area are invited to visit Moira Garden which was
designed and created by a Special Project Committee under the
auspices of the Tweed and District Horticultural Society.Moira
Garden is a commemorative garden. This garden was conceived in
the spirit of community participation to commemorate those that have
passed from us and to acknowledge our community’s commitment to
our
future.
Development
Begun
in 2003 with the creation of the many paths, the garden grew in
successive stages with the addition of the boulders and the planting
of the flower gardens, the setting of the gate posts and grills. A
spill tank and a drainage ditch were added to accommodate the run-off
and to slow the silting process. By 2008 a row of willows was
established along the back border and wild flowers were sewn on the
hill side.
Special
Features
Moira
garden features meandering paths of limestone, a dry Zen-type river
bed, an interesting variety of gardens, an eclectic selection of
trees and shrubs and beautiful Canadian Shield stones collected from
the local quarries near Tweed. In addition, there is a beautiful
circular rose garden which features a fine collection of explorer
roses.
Labyrinth
One
of the main attractions of the garden is its seven-circuit labyrinth
completed in 2007. The Tweed and District Horticultural Society is
proud to feature this addition to the garden for it is to date the
only labyrinth of this nature in Ontario associated with an
Horticultural Society.
